An Onion Cut with Meat Utensils and Fried in a Dairy Pan
Question
I cut an onion with a meat knife on a meat cutting board, both of which had not been used within the previous 24 hours, and it was fried in a dairy pan that had not been used within the previous 24 hours. What is the status of the food, and what is the status of the pan?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
In principle, an onion, which is sharp, absorbs and imparts taste even from utensils that have not been used within the previous 24 hours.
Therefore, when it is cut with the knife it becomes meaty, and when fried it receives a dairy taste. It is thus prohibited, and it also renders the pan prohibited.
However, in the case of an onion that is not actually very small, there is sixty times the volume against the blade of the knife. Therefore, if the entire onion was fried together in oil in the pan, the meat taste is nullified by sixty in the onion, and it is therefore not prohibited by absorbing the dairy taste from the pan, nor does it render the pan prohibited.
