Traveling Abroad During Bein HaMetzarim

Question

Hello Rabbi, I have a question: I am planning to fly to Thailand from 10/7–3/8, and only now did I notice that this falls during the period of Bein HaMetzarim, when according to Halacha one does not go to the sea / pool, does not buy new clothes…
And on this trip, that is ultimately what I am planning to do.
I really do not know what to do about this now, and I would be happy to consult with you on the matter 🙏🏼

Answer

Hello and blessings.

The period of Bein HaMetzarim is divided into two time frames. 1. The days from the 17th of Tammuz until the 1st of Av. 2. From the 1st of Av until the day after the 9th of Av.

During the days from the 17th of Tammuz until the 1st of Av [through 14/7 inclusive], it is permitted to buy clothing and to go to the pool and the sea. However, since these are days of sorrow, one must be more cautious regarding danger.

From the 1st of Av until the day after the 9th of Av [15/7–23/7], buying clothing, swimming in a pool or in the sea are forbidden, and it is certainly not an appropriate time for recreational outings.

However, according to the dates you mentioned, you have the days from the 10th of Av until the 20th of Av [24/7–3/8], during which everything is permitted.

Make sure that the trip is arranged in such a way that the recreational activities take place on those dates.
