Yom Kippur Fast — Low Hemoglobin and Underlying Medical Conditions

Question

Hello, honorable Rabbi. I am in my fifth pregnancy, in week 20, and I take care of four children ranging in age from 11 months to 4 years. Regarding the Yom Kippur fast: currently my hemoglobin is 7. In my previous pregnancy I had SVT in my legs, which was treated with Clexane and resolved after the birth. Now it seems that it has returned in the current pregnancy, although I have not yet been examined, and I have severe pain as in the past, swelling, and great difficulty functioning. How should I conduct myself regarding the fast?

Answer

Hello and blessings

You should eat and drink in shiurim.

Eating: 30 cc every 9 minutes.

And drinking: 40 cc every 9 minutes.

Eating and drinking are calculated separately, and therefore one may both eat and drink every 9 minutes.

Attached is an instruction sheet for one who needs to eat and drink on Yom Kippur.
