Fasting for a Woman with Epilepsy
Question
My wife suffers from epilepsy, which is not exactly well controlled. She has fasted for many years according to the instruction of a rabbi, ever since he said that, on the contrary, fasting is beneficial for epilepsy. ... Suddenly I see here on the site that a person with [controlled] epilepsy eats and drinks as usual on Tisha B’Av. I am completely confused. Could you perhaps direct me to sources on this matter?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
The halachic rulings regarding fasting in a state of illness that are brought here were conveyed by our teacher, Rabbi Amram Fried shlita, in consultation with a physician.
Of course, these rulings are not intended to replace a personal consultation with a physician who is familiar with your specific case in detail, followed by consultation with a rabbi who has received the physician’s instructions.
