A Heartburn Tablet on the Fast of Tisha B’Av

Question

Hello, Rabbi,
Is it permitted to take a tablet for heartburn on Tisha B’Av? The tablet is meant to be sucked.
If not, I will have to sleep in a semi-sitting position. What is the Rabbi’s opinion on the matter?

Answer

Hello and blessings,

If the heartburn weakens you to the point that your whole body becomes weak, you are considered ill and are exempt from fasting, and it is certainly permitted for you to take a lozenge.

If it is not a case of being “ill,” it is forbidden to take this tablet, which is defined as “food,” and one should try to sleep in whatever manner is possible.
