Chapter 3. Additional Laws of the Seder Night

Preparing the Egg
91.
The egg is boiled and then roasted over the fire [1] .

Preparing the Charoset
92.
Charoset is prepared from tart apples, dates, walnuts, almonds, and made into a thick mixture in memory of the mortar. Red wine is added to it, in memory of the blood. Spices are also added — cinnamon and ginger — because they resemble straw  [2] .

Eating Roasted Food
93.
Eating roasted meat is forbidden on the Seder night, but fish, an egg, and other roasted foods are permitted  [3] .

Meat That Was Cooked and Roasted
94.
Regarding meat that was cooked and roasted, we follow the final action: if the meat was ultimately roasted, it is forbidden to eat it; and if in the end it was cooked — after the roasting — it is permitted  [4] .

The Bedtime Shema
95.
The custom is to recite the Shema as one does every day, but the other additional passages are not recited; one says only “Into Your hand I entrust my spirit, etc.” and the blessing of Hamapil  [5] .
