Insurance claim

Question

Dear Rabbi! A few months ago, we flew abroad. When we were on our way back, a box with a hat, some ties and some cufflinks disappeared in the airport. Before the trip, we took out an insurance policy, which included a property insurance. When we filed a claim for the loss, we claimed a higher value. After about a month, the insurance company deposited 70% of the claimed value in our bank account (which is what the policy guaranteed us). This sum was almost equal to the actual value of the goods that we lost. Do I have to tell them that the claim was too high?

Answer

Dear …!

It is forbidden to claim more than what your insurance policy guarantees. You have to let them know what the true value of the lost goods was, and to receive your compensation according to their true value.
