Tithes from a Salary for Paying a Mortgage

Question

I went out to work in order to pay the monthly mortgage. Do I need to give tithes from the salary I receive?

Answer

Shalom and blessings

There is no exemption from ma’aser because you took a job for the purpose of paying the mortgage. Ultimately, you are working and earning, and the profit remains yours, since from those earnings you are acquiring an apartment of your own.

Only if you do not have enough for your monthly expenses are you considered “poor” and exempt from ma’aser.
