Preparing Black Coffee on Shabbat

Question

Shalom Rav

Is it permitted on Shabbat for an Ashkenazi to prepare black coffee in a third vessel, as is permitted with instant coffee?

Answer

Shalom u’vracha

It is forbidden for an Ashkenazi to pour boiling water over black coffee on Shabbat, since the coffee grounds have not been cooked but only roasted.

However, instant coffee, whether granulated or in powder form, may be prepared on Shabbat, since it has already undergone complete cooking before Shabbat.
