Returning a Defective Product

A person bought kugel that was placed for sale at the entrance of a synagogue and put money in the box. At home, he discovered that the kugel was spoiled. Can he take kugel next week without paying? And what is the ruling for someone who buys a product in a grocery store and finds it spoiled, can he exchange it or must he inform the store owner?

When purchasing in a self-service sale, one can take another product without notifying. However, in a store, he is obligated to inform the store owner.
