A summary of copyrighted material
Question
Every day I receive by email the laws of Shemirat HaLashon from “Two Halachot a Day.” I am accustomed to sending my friends at work (up to 15 women) only the summary, not the entire email. A friend pointed out to me that it says there: “© Distribution of the halachot and any other content from ‘Two Halachot a Day’ is conditional upon written permission and the following conditions.” Is it halachically permissible to send the summary to a small group, when there is no profit motive involved?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
Copyright applies only to the item in its original form, but when you make a summary of it and do not send the item itself, there is no problem.
