House Mother for Boys
Question
We were offered a position as house parents for 12 boys aged 9–14.
The job requires that the mother also have a personal relationship with the children,
such as asking how they are, etc.
The question is whether it is permitted for a woman to have a personal relationship with children.
Also, is it permitted for a woman to take them to the dentist and the like.
And what other matters should one be careful about.
Perhaps it would be preferable not to take such a job at all.

Answer
Hello and blessings.
It is a great mitzvah to provide a “home” for children who cannot grow up in their own home.
It is permitted for a woman to have a relationship with them as a “mother,” caring for their needs.
To accompany them to the doctor and the like, when necessary, is permitted.
One must be careful regarding yichud [such a situation is defined as “libo gas bah,” meaning that he is overly familiar with her, which makes the laws of yichud more stringent].
One must also be careful to avoid physical contact.
