Meat Ladle Accidentally Used in Pareve Soup Cooked in a Dairy Pot
Question
Hi Rabbi, I have a question about an accidental kashrut mistake. A friend brought me hot, but not boiling, pareve vegetable soup containing cooked onions (sharp food) that she made in her dairy pot. I accidentally dipped my clean metal meat ladle into the soup several times to serve myself and my husband. The ladle had not been used for almost two weeks. I do not know when the dairy pot was last used for dairy food, and I am not sure what material the pot is made of, though it looks like stainless steel. Is there any kashrut problem with the soup or the pot? Does the pot need kashering, and if so, can it be done at home?
Answer
Thank you for your question.
Since neither the pot nor the ladle is known to have been used within the last 24 hours, everything is permitted, and nothing needs to be kashered.
With regard to the onions, the dairy taste is batel b’shishim.
Wishing you well.
