Meaty Oven for Dairy Use - Halachic Guideline

Question

If I have an oven that is normally used for meat but because of the 9 days it has not been used in over a week, can I use it to cook something dairy? What if I cover the dairy item with aluminum foil prior to putting it in the oven? In either case would it affect our ability to use the oven for meat tomorrow in order to prepare food for Shabbos?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

The rule for using one oven for both milky and meaty foods—when one does not have two separate ovens—is as follows:

One should wait 24 hours, make sure the oven has been thoroughly cleaned of any residue, then insert the trays and racks and heat the oven at its maximum temperature (or use the self-clean mode at its highest, if it's a self-cleaning oven) for one hour. After that, it may be used for the opposite type of food.
