Exchanging Gifts During the Nine Days

Question

I am a kindergarten teacher, and I received several gifts from the children’s parents that I would like to exchange. During the Nine Days, may I exchange the gifts and choose something else for the home instead?

Answer

Hello and blessings.

Exchanging an item for another product is considered like a purchase in every respect. Therefore:

Expensive items — one should refrain from buying.

Items needed for the Nine Days — are permitted.

Items that are not needed for these days — one should minimize purchasing them if there is no reason to hurry with it.
