Eating lettuce on Rosh Hashanah; personal requests in the Rosh Hashanah prayer when it falls on Shabbat
Question
Is it permitted to eat lettuce (a vegetable used for maror) on Rosh Hashanah? When Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, is it permitted to make personal requests, and if so—when?
Answer
Shalom u’vracha
A. It is permitted to eat lettuce; it is tasty and only slightly bitter. [And the reason it is valid for maror is that if it remains in the ground, it will become bitter].
B. It is permitted. Either in the blessing that deals with that matter, or, preferably, at the end of the prayer after the first “יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן” (“May [the words of my mouth] be acceptable”). Afterward, one should again say “יִהְיוּ לְרָצוֹן” (“May [the words of my mouth] be acceptable”).
