Went to the bathroom in the middle of Birkat Hamazon

Question

In the middle of Birkat Hamazon he went with his young son to the bathroom and remained there long enough to be able to complete the entire blessing. What should he do?

Answer

For Ashkenazim, he must return to the beginning.
