The Blessing on Vegetable Soup with Chicken or Soup Powder
Question
What blessing is recited on vegetable soup with chicken (a meat dish)? Does the halacha change if the chicken was put in before the vegetables or after the vegetables? And what is the law in similar cases of vegetable soup with soup powder?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
The blessing on vegetable soup with chicken is Shehakol.
There is no difference whether he put the chicken in before the cooking or afterward. Since the taste of the chicken is noticeable, the soup does not have the status of “vegetable water.”
When there is soup powder together with the vegetables, here there is a distinction between someone who first put in the vegetables and afterward seasoned the dish with the powder, and someone who cooked soup with soup powder and afterward added the vegetables; in the latter case, the water does not have the significance of vegetable water, because the taste of the powder is noticeable and significant in its own right.
