Modesty at Home

Question

My wife walks around at home in summer sleepwear when there are no children present. Is this permitted?

Answer

Shalom and blessings.

Modesty is not only in relation to other people, but also before the Holy One, blessed be He. And it applies both to men and to women.

Therefore, it is forbidden to uncover the parts of the body that are normally covered without a need, even when a person is alone at home.

Only when there is a need is it permitted.

Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, sec. 2, paragraphs 1–2
Paragraph 1
One should not put on his shirt while sitting (Tur); rather, he should take his shirt and insert his head and arms into it while still lying down, so that when he gets up he is covered.
Paragraph 2
One should not say: “Here I am in my innermost chambers; who sees me?” for the Holy One, blessed be He, “the whole earth is full of His glory” (Isaiah 6:3).
