My Friend Uses a Computer on Yom Kippur!

Question

L’chvod Harav, shlit’a I learn with a partner in Torah (who is a reform Jew married to a non-Jew. I asked her last week if she is able to go to shul for Rosh Hashana, & she said not any more, because she’s physically handicapped. Then she sent me a text that she was so excited, she found a site on internet where they had Rosh hashana live prayers. No w she told me she’s going to go online on Yom Kippur.! My question: is it better for her not to go online on Yom Kippur? Or not say anything?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The desire to want to attend services is very commendable. However, one cannot violate a prohibition in order to do so. Hence, the act of joining services online is forbidden on Shabbat and holidays.

However, since your partner in Torah seems like she wants to be close to Torah it is better not to mention anything about it however if you can and you think she will listen then encourage her about trying not doing Melachos like driving or not eating, whatever you think she will understand and won't distance or discourage her.
