Kosher BBQ

Question

Hi, because of the temperature involved in doing a BBQ, can I use a grill that has previously had non kosher meat on it, as long as it is cleaned properly (but not officially "Koshered") prior to use? My understanding is that once the grill reaches a certain temperature, it is considered Koshered?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

A non-kosher BBQ grill requires “libun gamur” which is koshering by means of fire. However, since it is very difficult to properly clean and kasher the grill where the food is placed, since the metal will have to become red hot, we don’t recommend kashering it. You should get a new grill, and be sure to immerse it in a mikva before the first use. (the base of the BBQ is not a problem to use, just have to get a new grid where the food is placed).
