How to explain divorce to children?

Question

How do I explain to my nine year old son that I am divorcing his father? His father left us a year ago. I found phone records and realized he’d been talking to a much younger women. He has not seen our kids ages 18 & 9 in over a year.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry to hear of the troubles you are going through.

I would suggest explaining to your children that sometimes separation/divorce is the proper thing to do in order to keep everyone involved happy. Explain that divorce doesn’t necessarily mean that anyone involved is bad, and the like, but rather, some people are not just compatible together long term. Don’t blame anyone for anything. Always take the “high road” in divorce, especially when it comes to the children’s involvement and exposure.

I advise you to stay completely calm through this process and tell your husband in a firm but dignified way that you want an end to the marriage due to his having left you for over a year already and for his likely infidelity (if this is the case)

Make sure to make an arrangement that would allow him to see his kids, if they should want to see him.

There is no need for yelling and the like. The calmer you can remain during this process will make the process easier.

Good luck!
