Gift for Exchange?

Hello,
A husband whose father bought a gift for his grandchild, but if the child's mother did not like the style and wants to exchange it, but there is no exchange receipt. Can she tell the father that the clothing was too small and ask if he has an exchange receipt? Or should she say nothing and donate the gift to charity?

There is no problem in asking for an exchange receipt.
