Scope of the obligation of maaser kesafim

Is there a halachic obligation to give maaser kesafim (a tithe from my income), or is it only a good custom?

Shalom u’vracha
In halacha, maaser kesafim is a custom. Even though it is a custom, a person cannot say, “I do not practice it,” since it is an ancient custom from our forefathers Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, and all of Israel have practiced it; therefore we are obligated to observe it.
