Giving Maaser Money to Parents

Question

Shalom,
I am 18 years old, Baruch Hashem, I recently started working and earn a small salary (some side income). Since I am still supported by my parents and they are the ones providing for me, I wanted to ask about giving maaser from my salary.

My father, may he live and be well, is an avrech, and my mother is a teacher. I wanted to know whether it is permitted and accepted according to Halacha to give my maaser money to my parents, in order to help them with household expenses or for their personal well-being?

With blessings of Torah and many thanks,

Answer

Shalom u’vracha

If they do not have enough livelihood to make it through the month, or if they generally do have enough but currently have special expenses, it is permitted and obligatory to give priority to one’s parents before all other needy people.
