Calculating maaser for parents’ commitment to pay apartment rent

Question

Shalom.

The parents committed to pay a couple’s rent for a year. The couple received their salary and paid the apartment owners instead of the parents. Can this be counted as maaser?

Answer

Shalom u’vracha.

Ideally, it is preferable that they give the maaser to the parents, and the parents should be the ones to pay.
