Buying Treats for Someone Eligible for Charity
Question
Is it permitted to use ma’aser funds to buy special treats for a poor person who is eligible for charity, such as a young couple living in financial hardship who are staying in the hospital with their sick son?
Answer
Shalom u’verachah
Anything that a poor person needs is considered tzedakah.
In a case like this, where the couple is staying in the hospital and naturally needs some pampering and relief from their situation, this is considered a need, and it is permitted to buy it with charity funds.
