Can the prayer leader perform the opening

Question

Can the prayer leader open the ark and take out the Torah scroll himself and then carry it, or must it be done by someone else?

Answer

There is a custom for someone else to perform the opening, and the prayer leader takes it out and hands it to the prayer leader.
