Reading a book on Shabbat
Question
Is it permitted on Shabbat to read a secular book, or is this prohibited as “shtarei hedyotot”?
Answer
Shalom u’vracha
A book that contains neither wisdom nor words of Torah and moral instruction is considered “shtarei hedyotot.”
A book that contains ethical teaching is permitted.
Regarding a book of secular wisdoms, one may be lenient, but one who is God-fearing will be stringent.
