Walking to the Car on Shabbat
Question
Is it possible to take the keys and hide them on Erev Shabbat near the car, and then walk to the car on Shabbat, and as soon as three stars appear take the keys from the hiding place and start the car? (Even after the fact?)
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
It is forbidden on Shabbat to walk to a place where it is evident that one is preparing himself for something that is forbidden on Shabbat.
Therefore, it is forbidden to walk on Shabbat near the car so that on Motza’ei Shabbat he will be able to travel, since it is evident that he is preparing himself for traveling, which is forbidden on Shabbat.
However, it is permitted to walk in a manner that is not evident as preparation for Motza’ei Shabbat, such as walking in the form of a stroll near the place where the car is parked, so that on Motza’ei Shabbat he will be close to it.
