Tearing a Diaper in Order to Remove It from a Baby
Question
Hello, honorable Rabbi,
I wanted to ask about baby diapers that are in the form of underpants (pull-ups), meaning diapers that do not have Velcro on the sides, and in order to take them off one needs to tear the sides.
Is it permitted to tear the sides of the diaper on Shabbat in order to remove it from the baby, and afterward throw it in the garbage, just as it is permitted to open a regular diaper on Shabbat?
Or is there a problem of tearing/another melachah involved, and therefore it is forbidden to do this on Shabbat?
Thank you very much!
Answer
Hello and blessings,
It is forbidden to tear it on Shabbat.
