The Permitted Time for Selecting Food for a Meal

Question

I need to peel eggs and cut vegetables, work that takes at most 15 minutes. May I begin the preparations half an hour before netilat yadayim for the meal, if I plan immediately afterward to pray Minchah or rest a little before the meal? Or must I begin the preparations only within 15 minutes before netilat yadayim?

Answer

Shalom u’vrachah

There is no permission to begin earlier except within the amount of time needed for the preparation of this meal. For example, if one is preparing a small meal whose preparation requires 10 minutes, one may select only within 10 minutes of the meal.

However, this does not mean that one must calculate the exact number of minutes, but rather that it should be done during the usual time needed to prepare such a meal.
