Sorting Food Plates

Question

Sorting food plates on Shabbat

Answer

Hello and blessings

Separate plates that are on the table are not subject to the prohibition of borer.

A mixed stack of plates, as is commonly found in the sink after a meal, is subject to the prohibition of borer. Two conditions are required in order to permit sorting them: 1. That one take the plates he needs, and not those for which he has no need. 2. That the use of those plates be immediate. [The third condition, that one not use a utensil for the purpose of the sorting, is not relevant with plates].
