Using Cameras on Shabbat
Question
Is it permissible to activate security cameras with motion sensors before Shabbat, in such a way that the camera operates continuously but when a person passes by, a light on the screen turns on?
Answer
If the homeowner needs the camera for use, it is prohibited. However, for other people passing by, it is permitted, as they have no interest in it. It is advisable to activate the camera with a timer, so it operates only during hours when people do not pass by.
