Refrigerator without Shabbat Mode

Hello,
A person who is staying with his in-laws who have a refrigerator without Shabbat mode, but his father-in-law has removed the refrigerator light.
How should he regularly act when asked to take things out of or put things into the refrigerator?

In a refrigerator with sensors - there is no permission to open. In a refrigerator without sensors - leniency is allowed.
