Carrying Reading Glasses on Shabbat
Question
In a place without an eiruv, outside Israel, may I take eyeglasses outside on Shabbat? I cannot put them on my nose because I cannot see distances with them, but I need them because I cannot see up close without them (reading, food, etc.), and on Shabbat I have to go from place to place and use them in each place. What should I do?
Answer
In a place where there is no eiruv, it is forbidden to take glasses in one’s hands or pockets, but only by way of wearing them.
Therefore, either you can leave the glasses before Shabbat in the place where you will be staying on Shabbat, or, if it is a place where there is no very major road, you may wear them while walking.
