A Kohen Becoming Impure for a Dead Person in Order to Support His Wife

Question

My brother is a Kohen, and his wife’s father passed away. Is he permitted to become impure through contact with the dead in order to be by his wife’s side and support her?

Answer

Shalom and blessings.

It is forbidden to transgress any prohibition in order to encourage one’s wife, and this includes the prohibition of becoming impure through contact with the dead.

If his wife needs support, he may remain near her, at a distance of 4 amot (2–2.40 meters) from the graves.
