An Illuminating Mezuza

Question

Shalom. I am trying to create a mezuzah case but my idea is to make the case with a transparent window and have a sensor that when the case is touched or one’s hand comes close the the case that it would illuminate showing the mezuzah inside. My intent is not to distract from the mitzvah in any way but rather to give an image of the light that the words of Hashem has In our lives. But I do not wish to make it against kosher ruling. Any electrical wiring would not be in the same “holding space” as the mezuzah scroll itself. Otherwise it would be firmly affixed all to kosher standards. The light and wiring are my only objections to this project. Thank you for your time.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

We commend your efforts to make the holy mitzva of mezuza more exciting.

There is one primary problem and that has to do with Shabbat. On Shabbat it is forbidden to cause any lights or circuits to be activated. As such, your idea should perhaps be used in a different mitzva context that does not involve any concerns with Shabbat desecration.
