Honoring One’s Father and Mother in a Difficult Situation

Question

Is a child allowed to be angry at his parents if they emotionally abuse him every day? And are parents allowed to speak to their child disrespectfully and behave toward him disrespectfully just because they are his parents?

Answer

Shalom u’verachah

It is impossible to answer this question without understanding all the details, as I will explain.

Regarding the question itself, the answer is that one must honor even wicked parents. However, parents are certainly forbidden to humiliate or distress their son.

However, deciding what constitutes disrespectful behavior toward a child, and what is “emotional abuse,” is something that requires mature consideration.

From the perspective of a young child or teenager, any legitimate demand or request made by a parent can be interpreted as “disrespect,” and any normal demand on their part may be called by the child “abuse” and “wicked parents”...

Therefore, before you make such determinations, it is advisable that you consult with an educator who will understand what is really happening and how you should conduct yourself toward them.
