Going Out to a Gathering During the Year of Mourning
Question
I am in my year of mourning, and the extended family — my wife’s family: brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and all the children of the family — is going out for a bein hazmanim gathering that includes a pool, barbecue, etc.
May I participate?

Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
A mourner may not go out for recreation with the extended family or with friends. However, with the immediate family — sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law — it is permitted, even if there is no meal there.
If they urge him to go out with them, he may join. However, for an outing that includes food, it is forbidden.
