Mourning on a Family Shabbat

Mourning for his mother after thirty days within twelve months: The family is having Shabbat together in the neighborhood where some of the children live, for his wife's birthday. Is there a prohibition against participating in this Shabbat? If not, is it permissible to come a little before Shabbat, as the children want to take pictures together?
