Visiting the Grave on the Thirtieth Day
Question
My grandfather passed away abroad on the first day of Sukkot, and was brought for burial in the Land of Israel, at Har HaMenuchot. I am his only relative in Israel and I live in Karmiel. For the funeral we traveled to Har HaMenuchot and arranged for a minyan for the recitation of Kaddish. In preparation for the thirtieth day, the family abroad asked me to take care of the tombstone. Beyond that, what needs to be done on the thirtieth day? Is it necessary to visit the grave? Is a minyan needed? And if so, is it proper to take my sons out of their kollelim and yeshivot in order to participate?
Answer
Hello and blessings
It is customary to visit the grave on the thirtieth day.
The instruction of our teacher Rabbi Amram Fried shlita is that it is not proper to cancel the regular study schedules of yeshiva and kollel students for the purpose of visiting the grave. It is appropriate to arrange a minyan who will go to the grave without them.
