Visiting a grandmother’s grave on a mother’s yahrzeit

Question

Shalom, honorable Rabbi. Today is the 36th yahrzeit of my mother, peace be upon her. She is buried in Moscow, Russia, and I live in Israel. She passed away when I was two years old. Is there any significance in going today to pray at the grave of my grandmother — my mother’s mother — who is buried in Rehovot?

Answer

Shalom and blessings.

There is no such halachic concept of visiting the grave of another relative when it is not possible to visit the grave of the deceased.

However, praying for the elevation of your mother’s soul on the day of the yahrzeit is certainly important and appropriate. If you feel that there you will be able to pray better for the elevation of your mother’s soul, it is worthwhile to do so.
