Payment for Arbitration

Hello.
A few years ago, I went to a dayan for private arbitration, and he did not ask me for money.
Recently, I heard from someone that usually a significant amount is paid for this, and I thought that maybe he expected me to understand this on my own.
The question is, do I need to pay him anything for this?

Since it is customary to pay for this, you should ask the dayan if he intended to receive payment.
