Damaged projector cable
Question
Shalom. I have a question regarding monetary law:
I run a free-loan service (gemach) for renting out a projector.
A woman rented the projector from me and told me that her brother bent the cable of the projector. It is not known whether it was done unintentionally or intentionally. She told me that the cable was damaged and that she wants to buy me a new one.
Is she required to buy a new one? And it is also possible that this will cost her more than what I originally paid. (I do not remember how much I paid.) What is the halachah in this case?
Thank you very much!!
Answer
Shalom u’vracha,
She is obligated to pay for the damage.
She must either pay the price of a working cable or provide a new cable (depending on what you agree between yourselves).
In any case, there is no prohibition for her to pay for the cable more than it originally cost you.
