A loaned item that was damaged

Hello.
He borrowed a music player from a friend, removed the memory card and did not put it back, and it overheated and was ruined. Is he liable to pay?

He is exempt from paying him.

If the item "died" as a result of the work for which it was borrowed, he is exempt. Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat, siman 340, se’if 3.
