Is it halachically permitted to invest in an investment provident fund in a track that is not a Halacha track…
Question
Is it halachically permitted to invest in an investment provident fund in a track that is not a Halacha track, for example, in an S&P 500 index-tracking track or in the regular tracks of companies such as Harel or Mor? And if there is a problem, is it permitted to invest only in places where the companies are owned by non-Jews, and if so—which types of investments or places does this refer to?
Answer
Shalom u’verachah
A. An investment provident fund track requires kashrut supervision, since it necessarily includes several stocks, and if it is invested in Israel without supervision, there are certainly problematic stocks.
B. Investment in a particular stock owned by non-Jews, such as S&P and the like, does not require kashrut supervision.
C. Investment in tracks consisting solely of non-Jewish companies is permitted.
