Discount for Advance Payment
Question
My wife registered for a course. The course administration offers a 1.5% discount on tuition for those who pay in advance. Is there a concern of ribbit here?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
For a recorded course that already exists and can be viewed immediately, one may receive a discount.
For an in-person course, one may pay only 10%; otherwise, it is a loan with interest.
A heter iska may be arranged, whereby the seller of the course is considered to be borrowing the money and using it for business, and in return for the profits he gives 1.5% to the purchaser of the course—the lender.
