Interest in a Credit Card Installment Charge
Question
I have a credit card that sometimes offers a benefit: it is possible to split a transaction I already made into installments through the credit card company, rather than through the business, without interest. Is there a concern of ribbit in this, since the credit card company gives me this benefit because of the profit it gains from my holding its card?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
This is a loan with interest. You are taking a loan from the credit card company [i.e., deferring the payment that they already paid on your behalf to the business], and paying it interest for that.
This requires a heter iska. And as with every heter iska, you must truly have a “business.” Alternatively, an apartment in Eretz Yisrael is also considered a “business.”
