Taking a Second Job
Question
Hello rabbi, I have a full time job, Baruch Hashem, and I was offered a different position running parallel to my current one - only at a part time, contract capacity. The two positions are similar but I’ve been thinking if I took the other position in addition to the current, would there be any gezel, knowing I’m working from home and will be devoting some of the time from my current employer to do the other one, not to mention utilizing some of its resources (knowledge/consultants who could advise me to do the other job and so on?)
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
You most definitely cannot “devote some of the time from my current employer to do the other one.” That would be gezel from your current employer, unless for example while working for the current job you anyway have to wait for a reply, so in the meanwhile you can do what you want, even if it's for another job, since it doesnt effect your current job in any way.
However, for the most part, you would be permitted to work the other job outside the hours of the current job, should it be an option, as long as it does not affect your performance at your fist job.
Regarding “utilizing some of its resources (knowledge/consultants who could advise me to do the other job and so on)” -- this is a very sensitive matter which requires more information on the employment norms in your industry. For the most part, using “knowledge” gained in one job and applying it to do the other job better would be permitted. However, using “knowledge” that is sensitive or secretive in the other job that would undermine the success of the first job is often forbidden as it is a form of competing with the first job.
